Bloggers–We’re Media but Better

Blogging is an important part of my own personal branding strategy.  It’s therapeutic for me and part of my business strategy at Xceptional HR.  Bloggers like myself who work hard to write interesting and relevant content about news topics are being looked to as a form of media, and we absolutely should.

We’re Media but Better.

I believe this wholeheartedly and no offense to my media friends out there.  Bloggers are the David of the media world with Goliath being traditional media.  We’re small and one of the people talking about topics from the end-users perspective.  And because most bloggers don’t have a hidden agenda, the readers like that.

Our networks are organic and loyal without the help of shiny buttons and fancy television advertising or email lists.  A blogger’s words are from the lips of someone who’s been there.

Blogs are the ultimate social media reality show.  David wasn’t conventional.  We (bloggers) are real and from the heart.  It’s about passion, and our blog is an extension of ourselves.   It’s exciting.  It’s engaging.  It’s real and people like that.

Engagement is business.  It’s what turns browsers into buyers.  Bloggers provide an alternative to the shiny media and advertising world that is real, relevant, and often more timely than traditional news outlets.

We root for the underdog because inside ourselves, they are a little bit of us.  Unlike media, bloggers don’t have large streams of advertising and sponsorship revenues like the large media networks.  I am very particular about who I represent as a blogger, partner with, and collaborate with.  And because we don’t have a large river of cash rolling in from our blogs, we don’t have the funds to cover travel and hotel expenses to cover large events without the help of others.

Treat a blogger well and invite them to an event recognizing them as media, and they are enthusiastic.  Cover their travel and hotel expenses and they will be forever loyal.  A loyal and passionate audience is what drives change, engagement, and business. Be more than good to your blogger and they will do the same for you.

Because Bloggers–We’re Media but Better.

This post was written with a particular organization in mind and is something that all businesses who engage bloggers should consider.  Yup, you know who you are.

Well said. All of this is going on while the newspaper industry is struggling to survive. The internet thing must be here to stay. Thanks Al Gore!

Great post Jess. I surely hope that everyone trying to enter this new media space realizes that the old habits and behaviors are just not good business and not the way you want to be treated or treat other people. The bloggers words are golden as they are usually original thoughts, agreed. Now we have to see what “actions” happen with those who need to change the lens of which they view the HR world.

    Thanks, Bryan Wempen
